Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands nestled in the Andaman Sea, located in the northwestern corner of Malaysia near the Thai border, in the state of Kedah. Known officially as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah, it was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2007 — one of the first in Southeast Asia — recognizing its extraordinary geological heritage, rich rainforests, and unique biodiversity formed over 550 million years.
Sitting just 51 km from Kuala Perlis and connected by ferry and direct flights from Kuala Lumpur (approximately 1 hour), Langkawi is remarkably easy to reach. The island enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with the best time to visit between November and April when the skies are clear and the sea is calm. The wet season runs from May to October, but even then, rain is usually brief and doesn’t stop the adventure.

One of Langkawi’s most popular experiences — a guided boat cruise through the Kilim River mangrove ecosystem. You will see monitor lizards, hornbills, sea eagles, and exotic fish in their natural habitat. Most tours include a visit to a floating fish farm and a bat cave. It typically runs 2–3 hours and is suitable for all ages.

Langkawi sunsets are legendary. The sky transforms into deep orange, pink, and purple as the sun drops behind the Andaman Sea. The best spots are Tanjung Rhu beach (quieter, more exclusive), Pantai Cenang (lively, with beach cafés), and the Oriental Village near the cable car. Many resorts also offer sunset cocktail cruises — a truly romantic experience.

Pantai Cenang is the hub of Langkawi’s water sports scene. Jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing, and paddleboarding are all available daily. Speeds can reach up to 80 km/h on the open sea — thrilling for adventure seekers. Operators are stationed along the beach and most activities can be booked on the spot.
🚡 Langkawi Cable Car (SkyCab) & SkyBridge
Ride the Langkawi Cable Car up Gunung Machinchang — one of the steepest cable car rides in the world — for a panoramic view of the entire archipelago and the Thai coast. At the top, walk across the Langkawi Sky Bridge, a curved pedestrian bridge suspended 100 metres above the rainforest canopy. One of the most iconic experiences on the island.
Eagle Feeding at Kuah Jetty
The majestic Brahminy Kite (sea eagle) is Langkawi’s symbol, and you can witness them up close. Boat tours near Kuah Town release fish into the sea and eagles swoop down to feed in dramatic fashion. A short, affordable, and unforgettable activity especially for photographers and families.
🛍️ Duty-Free Shopping
Langkawi is one of Malaysia’s designated duty-free zones, meaning chocolates, perfumes, alcohol, cigarettes, and electronics are significantly cheaper here than on the mainland. The main shopping areas are Kuah Town (largest selection), Cenang Mall, and Underwater World’s nearby shops. Stock up on gifts and treats before you leave!

Half-day and full-day island hopping tours take you to the best snorkelling spots around Langkawi’s surrounding islands — including Pulau Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), Pulau Beras Basah, and Pulau Singa Besar. ✈️ Getting to Langkawi
Langkawi International Airport (LGK) receives direct flights from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia, MAS ~1 hour), Johor Bahru, Penang, and Singapore. Ferries are available from Kuala Perlis (1 hour) and Penang (2.5 hours). The ferry is the most budget-friendly option and the scenery is beautiful.
🚗 Renting a Car
Car rental is the most convenient way to explore Langkawi as public transport is very limited. Rates start from approximately RM80–150/day for a basic sedan. Most rental agencies are at the airport and along Pantai Cenang. An international or Malaysian licence is required. Roads are good and driving is straightforward.
🛵 Renting a Scooter / Motorcycle
The most popular option for budget travellers and solo explorers. Scooters can be rented for RM35–60/day. They allow you to explore beaches, hidden trails, and villages at your own pace. Helmets are provided. Best for travellers who are comfortable riding on the left side of the road.
🚕 Taxi & E-Hailing
Taxis are readily available at the airport and main tourist spots. Fares are metered or negotiated. Grab (the regional Uber equivalent) operates in Langkawi and is recommended for convenience and transparent pricing. Airport to Pantai Cenang is approximately RM25–35 by taxi.
⛵ Boat & Ferry
Internal water transport is available for island hopping and mangrove tours. Private boat charters can be arranged for custom itineraries. The Telaga Harbour marina is also a popular departure point for sunset cruises.

💰 Budget (RM60–150/night)
Langkawi has a great selection of budget guesthouses and hostels, mainly in the Pantai Cenang strip. Options include fan rooms, air-conditioned chalets, and beach-side budget resorts. Clean, friendly, and perfectly located for those who want to save money and still be close to the beach and restaurants. Ideal for backpackers, solo travellers, and groups of young friends.
🏨 Mid-Range (RM150–400/night)
The most popular tier for families and couples. Mid-range hotels offer swimming pools, breakfast packages, air-conditioning, and comfortable rooms. Many are within walking distance of Pantai Cenang or Pantai Tengah. You get great value — clean facilities, good service, and a proper holiday feel without spending a fortune.

Best Time to Visit Langkawi

Dry, sunny, perfect for beach activities and island hopping. Sea is calm for snorkelling and kayaking.
🌧️ Shoulder / Wet Season: May – October
Brief rain showers — mostly in the afternoon. Not ideal for island hopping but still very enjoyable. Prices are lower and it’s less crowded.
